USC football player charged with DUI

COLUMBIA – USC football player DeVonte Holloman was arrested at a safety checkpoint in Downtown Columbia Friday night.

The 20-year-old was charged with a DUI, according to South Carolina Department of Public Safety spokesman Sid Gaulden.

Gaulden said the checkpoint where Holloman was arrested was part of a crackdown on DUI’s and nighttime seat belt enforcement, called “Operation Downtown.”

It took place at the intersection of George Rogers Blvd and Bluff Road near Williams-Brice Stadium.

He said there were a total of 12 arrests made as a result of the checkpoint.

Holloman plays strong safety for the Gamecocks and is considered to be a starter in the upcoming season.

The junior played in 14 games last year.

USC has not released a statement on the incident.

State audit: No missing funds at Clyburn center

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A state audit says no money is missing at a troubled transportation research center at South Carolina State University named for U.S. Rep. James Clyburn.

But the Legislative Audit Council report released Tuesday says the Orangeburg school doesn’t have a viable plan to raise more than $80 million needed to complete the center.

Liberian president to make Midlands visit

COLUMBIA — The Capital City is getting a presidential visit next week.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf will be the keynote speaker at a celebration banquet at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.  Sirleaf is the only female head of state on the continent of Africa.

Tuesday, local leaders gathered to make the announcement.

“We are looking for about 4,000 participants at this event,” Ike McLeese, CEO of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce says.  “That will generate about 1,500 room nights and over $1 million in economic impact.”

Sirleaf’s visit also highlights the connection between Liberia and South Carolina.

The country was founded by former slaves from the Palmetto State.

“They moved there because of discrimination in the United States,” says USC History Professor Dan Littlefield.  “There was this idea that you couldn’t argue for equality in the United States, at least successfully until you demonstrated you could build a successful nation in Africa.”

Sirleaf studied at Harvard and spoke at the university’s graduation ceremonies last month.

Tickets are $75.  If you’re interested in attending next week’s event visit the Township Auditorium website.

Union files complaint against GOP senator

WASHINGTON — The union representing Boeing Co. workers in Washington state has filed an ethics complaint against Sen. Lindsey Graham, alleging the South Carolina Republican is trying to pressure the National Labor Relations Board into dropping a suit targeting the aircraft manufacturer.

Graham calls the complaint an attempt to intimidate him and others and says he won’t be intimidated.

The complaint was filed May 20 and released by Graham’s office on Tuesday. It asks the Senate’s ethics committee to investigate comments by Graham.

The NLRB sued Boeing in April, saying the company built a non-union assembly plant in South Carolina in retaliation against union workers in Washington for labor strikes.
