Moore Norman Technology Center and Canadian Valley Technology Center both earned the title of Gold Star School. The Gold Star program recognizes technology center districts that show overall excellence through completion rate, placement rate, capacity and other standards.
Moore Norman Technology Center and Republic Bank and Trust were honored with a Partners for Progress Award for improvement and development of career and technology centers.
Moore Norman Executive Director Karla Marshall earned the Outstanding Educator Award. Marshall developed the Moore Norman Technology Center Summer Youth Academy enrichment program in 1995 for children ages 9 to 16. The program enrolls nearly 1,000 children each summer for career and technical classes.
Also, Troy Scott of Francis Tuttle received the Outstanding New Professional Award, which is given to potential leaders who have been working at a technical school for at least two years.
COLUMBIA — Richland County officials gave kids in the community a chance to learn and beat the summertime blues Thursday.
The fun and educational youth program is designed to teach students ages 6-12 about Richland County Government and the greater Midlands community.
This year’s theme is ”Navigating Your Way Through Richland County”.
Students learned about animal care, climbed inside a real fire truck and ambulance, and had a chance to meet the 9-foot deputy.

COLUMBIA – An alternative form of education is gaining popularity in South Carolina.
The Provost Academy is a state authorized public online high school. Nearly 1,200 students are currently enrolled in the school.
The computer-based education program is free for South Carolina residents. Students work toward a public high school diploma that is recognized by employers and colleges.
New Executive Director Judy Sherman says the school serves students who need choices in education. Some of their students compete full-time in sports and need the flexible schedule others are too ill to attend a traditional classroom every day.
“As the online programs grow in our country, it’s becoming…something that is more norm than an exception,” Sherman said.

The Digital Bookmobile will come to the Akron area the first week in August to promote downloadable e-books, audiobooks, music and video.
The bookmobile is housed in a 74-foot truck that will visit the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 2, the main Akron-Summit County Public Library in downtown Akron from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 3 and the North Canton Public Library from 2 to 6 p.m. Aug. 4.
“The Digital Bookmobile visit will be a technology petting zoo for adults,” said Ann Hutchison, information technology director at the Akron library.
The community outreach vehicle has been touring the country since August 2008 to showcase new technology to library patrons. It is a service of the Cleveland-based Overdrive, a digital distributor of ebooks, audiobooks and the like.
