Three Things Community Colleges Offer

For anyone seeking a new career or just graduating high school, online community colleges can help put you on the path to success. Here are three things that community colleges can offer you.

1.  Degree Programs

Online community colleges have a variety of Associate, Bachelor and Master Degree programs. You can get an online degree in programs such as Psychology, Education or Criminal Justice in as little as two years. You can also advance your degree and attend a four-year online college after graduation. The higher your degree, the more income you may receive in the future.

2.  Online Classes

The convenience of having most, if not all, of your classes online is a plus. This helps out students who have other obligations, such as jobs and family, complete their degree program without having to worry about commuting or time management. If you fall into this category of students, you are not alone. There are many others like you who study for higher paying careers while working or raising a family. So

Review of Impact of New Technologies in English Maintained Schools

Published by the British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA), this is a report on research undertaken to find out how schools use, and anticipate using, new technology.  It covers funding, hardware used by teachers, hardware used by pupils, software used by teachers, communicating with parents through social networking and other means, and home access.

This will be of use primarily to companies wanting to plan for selling to the education market, although I think it has enough of interest to justify purchase by Local Authorities despite its eye-watering price tag of £650 to non-members (which is pretty low in comparison with another corporate-funded piece of research which was selling for £5,000.)

It contains interesting results, such as the fact that none of the schools covered by the survey currently make extensive use of smartphones, which seems a bit of a wasted opportunity. Another interesting observation is that a much higher percentage of primary schools make extensive use of visualisers (document cameras) than secondary schools – 15% compared to 1%. Why

Au Sable Light Station impacted by budget cuts

PICTURED ROCKS NATIONAL LAKESHORE — Although rarely used for navigational purposes today, lighthouses are still a favorite of many. Hundreds came out to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Saturday for Au Sable Day at the Au Sable Light Station.

Park rangers say the lighthouse continues to be one of the most popular spots in the park, but also the most financially challenging.

The view from the top of the 1874 Au Sable Light Station hasn’t changed in more than 100 years, but it’s still something people can’t seem to get enough of.

Saturday’s tours filled up quickly, but the simplicity of the historic structure is misleading. Thousands of dollars have already been spent to keep it open to the public, and even more funding is needed.

“Old buildings, when they’re not used in the wintertime in peculiar, there’s problems with moisture buildup and so on,” said Education Manager David Kronk.

One solution they’ve come up with is to expand the currently existing solar panels that completely fuel the building next to the tower, which still houses light tower volunteers in an apartment atop the museum.

How using apps and online resources benefits ESL students with limited resources

From spelling to grammar to intonation, learning a new language can be difficult. With its exceptions and broad geographical influence, the English language is no different. However, times are changing. Non-native speakers of English now outnumber native speakers 3 to 1. With the enormous increase in the number of students taking on English as a Second Language , especially those with limited resources, an array of wallet-friendly apps and online resources have cropped up to make the learning process speedier and less tedious.

Apps and online resources can make learning English fun. Instead of repeating common English phrases in a classroom setting, ESL students can play games, go to online schools, and complete exercises while learning the ins and outs of the language, even if they are far away from a real teacher or school. The Internet TESL Journal created a site comprised solely of quizzes, tests, exercises and puzzles for ESL students. With thousands of contributions from teachers, students can take advantage of exercises that suit their needs.
