Still Pondering How to Break the News

As much as I would like to be announcing that I have found a job, unfortunately I have not.

Ever since I found out I would be writing for Hire Education, I have been pondering how I would break the fantastic news of my future employment. But alas, I am about to “Walk the Lawn” at UVA in a couple of days and graduate with diploma in hand but with no job in sight. I knew finding jobs as a new graduate RN was more difficult than many people thought, but I never expected it to be this difficult.

I’ve found most places are reluctant to hire new graduate RNs for two reasons. They cost more to hire and train than experienced RNs, and many new graduates transfer jobs or go back to school after about a year or two, leaving the hospital in the same position as it was before. I have also noticed that almost every hospital wants to hire RNs with experience, but in order to get experience, you have to have a job, but most jobs require experience. Catch my drift?

No matter how discouraging my job prospects may look at the moment, nothing could damp my excitement about graduating. These past four years of my life have gone by extremely fast, yet in these four years I have not only learned about the intricacies of the nursing profession, but I have also gained lifelong friends and nursing mentors, made memories that will last a lifetime, and grown from a timid First Year to a confident and excited Fourth Year. I have learned something from everyone I’ve encountered during my time at UVA: from the Dean of Nursing, the Assistant Dean of Students, to Janice the now-retired School of Nursing Secretary, down to the UVA nursing alums who, I hear, read each of my blogs. Everyone I’ve encountered down the path I’ve taken at UVA has taught me how to believe in myself, work tirelessly towards my goals, and walk optimistically into the world.

And every time I have to reply, “I don’t know” to someone asking me what I’m doing after graduation, although it kills me a little inside to not know, I wouldn’t change a thing about my time in college. I am proud to be a part of the Class of 2011, proud to be a Wahoo, and even more proud to be one of Mr. Jefferson’s Nurses.
