State budget writers consider charter school increase
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A budget-writing committee in the South Carolina Legislature is considering whether to spend an additional $22 million on charter schools.
House budget writers are expected to consider an amendment Wednesday as they work on a $5.2 billion general fund spending plan. The committee decided Tuesday not to take the money from a part of the budget that funds schools.
Charter school advocates say schools organized under the statewide charter district don’t get enough money to operate. The proposal would have given the district’s online schools an extra $2,500 per student, while “brick and mortar” schools would get $4,000 extra.
The 11 schools currently get state and federal, but no local, money.
