Shorter school week possible under proposal

COLUMBIA - South Carolina school districts could get creative with the school day under a bill approved in the House.  The measure would change the state’s 180-day requirement for classroom time into the equivalent number of hours.

Supporters say it gives districts flexibility.  Opponents say it would open the door to four-day school weeks.

The proposal would allow schools to tack some time onto school days. That would allow them to shave some days off the school calendar and still meet the required hours students must be in class.

The House approved the bill 90-3 last Thursday.

“You’d have some cost savings without the buildings being open and having to be air conditioned,” said Senate Education Committee Chairman John Courson.  “The downside is they would be in school for more hours per day.”

Courson says his committee will review the bill but he doubts it will be debated on the senate floor before the year’s session ends.
