SC Supt. suggests funding cuts for teacher training
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina schools Superintendent Mick Zais is suggesting $107 million in education cuts that include money for teacher training and evaluations, improvement on SAT scores, and school maintenance.
Zais recommended Wednesday that House budget writers cut two dozen programs. He says while they’re beneficial, trimming those programs would have the least negative impact on student learning.
Zais also requested $36 million in more money for teacher stipends, additional teachers for online learning, and school bus transportation. State law requires the $7,500 yearly stipends for teachers who earn a national certification.
Zais made the presentation to the House Ways and Means subcommittee that writes the budget for public schools.
