Red Cross launches new life saving program

COLUMBIA — American Red Cross officials launched a new “Citizen CPR” lifesaving program Wednesday.

Thanks to a $12,000 corporate grant from Colonial Life the American Red Cross, Columbia Region will be able to train 1,000 people to perform the hands-only CPR technique this year.

Nationwide the Red Cross has a goal to train five million people this year, potentially saving thousands of lives.

“The goal of ‘Citizen CPR is simple…to save lives,” said Scott Salemme, Regional Chief Executive Officer, American Red Cross, Columbia region.  “Having more citizen bystanders trained in this simple skill can help save lives by putting more cardiac arrest victims within a few steps of lifesaving skills.”

Citizen CPR takes 30 to 45 minutes to learn and costs $15.
