Legislators, new leaders tackle impact of state’s budget shortfall

COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) — Legislators get their first glance at the impact the state’s $829 million projected budget shortfall may have on schools, colleges, prisons and health care for the elderly, disabled and poor.

The House Ways and Means Committee hearing Thursday is also the first time Cabinet nominees of Gov. Nikki Haley and new Education Superintendent Mick Zais get to talk about their budgets.

Zais says he’ll work to privatize the state-owned and -operated school bus system.

The committee will also hear from leaders of the departments of corrections, social services and health and human services.

The Budget and Control Board will likely take up the shortfall at a meeting Thursday evening at 4 p.m.  You can watch it live by clicking here.

WACH Fox Reporter Emily Pace will be at the meeting and will have more as it becomes available.
