House approves charter schools funding bill

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A House budget-writing panel has approved spending $25 million on charter schools in South Carolina.

A Ways and Means subcommittee voted Wednesday to send the money to schools organized under the statewide charter school district. Advocates praised the move as providing what’s needed to keep the schools open.

Earlier Wednesday, the full House voted 85-32 on a bill designed to increase the number of charter schools. They are public schools overseen by a board of parents, teachers and community members, rather than a school district.

The state has more than 40 charter schools. The 11 in the statewide district get state and federal, but no local, money.
