Haley works with higher ed leaders about shrinking funds
COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) — Gov. Nikki Haley met with officials of South Carolina’s public colleges and universities.
The Republican governor held a news conference Tuesday morning following their meeting.
“It is easy to look at quick fixes but it is better to look at the core issues of these institutions,” Haley said at the State House talking about higher education funding.
Publicly supported colleges are expecting another round of budget cuts for the fiscal year that starts July 1.
“We have to hold these instituions accountable,” says Haley “what are these schools going to do to make sure that when these students graduate they are going to be placed in jobs?”
Former Gov. Mark Sanford organized a higher education summit last September that was meant to jump-start discussions on how to make college education more affordable. Sanford had long chastised colleges for rising tuition rates.
The discussion went nowhere. Sanford argued colleges are well funded, while college officials argued tuition hikes were the result of deep state budget cuts.
Legislators say they could cap tuition rates this year.
