AG: USC doesn’t need permission to expand
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The University of South Carolina is proceeding with plans to expand its medical school in Greenville, following an opinion from the attorney general that the college doesn’t need permission from the state’s higher education agency.
The Commission on Higher Education on Friday canceled three hearings scheduled for later this month to review the college’s plans.
In an opinion this week, Attorney General Alan Wilson said the commission has jurisdiction on approving new programs, not expansions of existing ones. The letter reiterated an opinion issued in January by former Attorney General Henry McMaster.
The university is expanding its program in Greenville from two years to four.
A college spokeswoman says the letter allows the college to proceed with the accreditation process this summer. The first class should enroll in 2012.
