A Knight in Shining Armor

It’s the third month of waiting for an internship position I have had my eyes on for a long time. I began contacting an agricultural-related public relations and full-service agency before my leadership conference in November, to get a head start before meeting them in person. After many emails and phone interviews with various departments and representatives from the company, I have had my fingers crossed while they decide on their 2011 account-services summer intern position.

Throughout these past few months, I learned a lot just by talking to the agency representatives. Many of them did not have the agricultural background I would have expected before they started working at the agency, and now they run many accounts and serve a diverse range of clients. I also learned people are willing and more than happy to share information if you ask.

I took advantage of the old, “Do you have any questions for me, or what our company does?,” even though I researched everything I could about them before speaking with them. My questions were more personal: “How do you deal with deadlines,” or “How much work is done outside the office?” It was truly enjoyable learning about the ins and outs of this agency during my interviews. I spent so much time preparing my samples of work, researching about the agency, and phone interviews that I now realize how much I yearn to kick off another opportunity for my future.

I have been planning to send out my resume to about a dozen other agencies and companies next week as well, but today I received a peculiar email. It was two sentences long.

“Hi Trish, I am looking for a summer intern to help with fund-raising. Would you be interested?”

I literally stared at this email for a solid minute. After hours of working to brand myself to the other agency, here was a two-sentence-long invite from a consulting and fund-raising firm I volunteered for last summer. If emails shine with auroras, mine had the biggest.

My answer is on hold since I do not know what the details are, and I am still waiting for the other agencys decision. But this was my knight in shining armor since I was preparing to battle more waves of new companies and potential interviews. I have this to fall back on, and a Plan B is always awesome to have. It is just ironic how two opportunities surfaced to me. Job hunting is truly a crazy experience.
