Louisiana Tech’s English Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta is hosting a series of events as part of “Shakespearit,” the Sixth Annual Shakespeare Birthday Festival, April 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the GTM Courtyard.

More than 480 winners of the Certified Healthy Oklahoma awards program will be honored at a luncheon and awards ceremony Thursday.
The program has five categories: businesses, restaurants, schools, communities and campuses, all of which made an effort to promote healthier eating options, exercise and a tobacco-free lifestyle.
The United Health Foundation ranked Oklahoma 48th in overall health in its America’s Health Rankings report.
“It’s not secret, Oklahoma has some of the worst health rankings in the nation, and this is one piece of the puzzle to improve those health outcomes for the entire state,” said Neil Hann, chief of the community development service at the state Health Department.
And for the first time, there’s a monetary incentive available for communities who receive the Certified Healthy Communities award.

The Jefferson Parish School Board has found a way to save $29,000. It is considering withdrawing from the Louisiana School Boards Association.

Before it does, however, board members want to hear from association representatives regarding two recent events.
The first is its political action committee’s endorsement of the two challengers, Lee Barrios and Sharon Hewitt, in the 1st District race for the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Both are outspoken critics of education reforms that incumbent James Garvey and the Jefferson school system — under the largely new School Board and interim Superintendent James Meza — support.
“The Jefferson Parish School Board was denied input in the endorsement procedure of an election that directly affects Jefferson Parish,” board President Michael Delesdernier wrote in a letter to state association President Darren Manuel and Executive Director Lloyd Dressel.
