From the publisher: Practice, practice, practice

Which of these two approaches do you believe generates better results, whatever the endeavor?

  1. Constantly shifting gears; placing a high value on trying new programs and strategies without necessarily waiting to evaluate the results of what you have initiated before moving on to the next new thing.
  2. Deciding on a course of action and then sticking to it faithfully for an extended period of time, even when evidence surfaces suggesting that there may be better strategies and newer, more innovative techniques that could yield better results.

In the real world, of course, one needn’t choose one or the other. But I would argue that public education systems in this country have most often and by default chosen something resembling the first approach over the second. The frenetic pace of new mandates and initiatives have made it almost impossible for educators to settle in and get good at implementing any particular series of changes.

A Horse Saved My Life Last Night (And Can Save Yours Too!)


I saw Secretariat last night.

Believe it or not, the movie saved my life.

It could save yours too, but only if you keep reading.

The love of my life, my horse Payday, physically broke me more than once in 2006, with one accident so severe it left me nearly paralyzed.

Though we’d taken Ohio by storm the prior year, placing third in the state with a rookie rider and a horse that was new to the area, most people would’ve sold him without a second thought.

Coach goes barefoot to help students in need

WEST COLUMBIA (WACH) — When you get dressed every day you probably put on your shoes without thinking twice. For millions of children that’s a luxury they don’t have. A coach in the Midlands is taking steps to make sure those kids don’t have to go barefoot ever again.

Glenforest School basketball coach William Knopf greeted parents barefoot Thursday morning.

“My feet are very cold but yes they are bare,” he said.

As parents dropped off their kids for school, many handed over new shoes to support a charity called Samaritan’s Feet.

Program reduces drop out rate in Columbia

COLUMBIA (WACH) — For Taylor Hicks transitioning from middle school to high school was a big concern primarily because of peer pressure and academics.

But Hicks says thanks to a program called “Diplomas Now” its a whole new ball game.

“It teaches you to focus on your school and to focus on finding yourself,” says Hicks.
